Case Study - Translating Customer Wants into Product Features

Situation:
A market leader in the production and sales of golf cars was suffering from high operations costs and looking for a "clean-sheet" approach to develop a replacement for their segment leading product in response to new product offerings by key competitors.

Solution:
ASG assisted the company to develop and streamline their Product Creation System resulting in:

  • Creation of comprehensive Quality Function Deployment (QFD)/ Voice-of-the-Customer driven product development/program management plan (based on the principles of Advanced Product Quality Planning [APQP]) with aggressive up-front concept generation and selection processes.
  • Improved Design for Manufacturing and Assembly methodologies to reduce the number and complexity of parts and improve manufacturing efficiencies. 

Result:
Featuring several industry-first innovations and 40 percent fewer parts than the previous model, the new product exceeded labor cost reduction and quality improvement targets, while decreasing maintenance time and overall operating cost to the customer.
